Investment Firm Follows its Own Example;
Retrofits Office Space for Energy Savings
Principal Real Estate Investors, the dedicated real estate group of
Principal Global Investors, has retrofitted its new office space to
achieve energy savings. In so doing, PREI drew upon its own experience in LEED for Commercial Interiors.
The 19,800-sf space at 888 Seventh Ave. features low-flow water
fixtures, energy-efficient lighting fixtures and design and programmable HVAC units. It also includes low privacy barriers for work
areas and very few enclosed offices, both intended to maximize
natural light in the workspace.
PREI was recently named “Green Giant of the Year” at the third
annual EPIC Awards with special recognition for its portfolio of
more than $1.3 billion of green properties and efforts to retrofit existing properties to conform to LEED standards. The company has
eight LEED accredited professionals on staff, along with a green
task force that focuses on building and operating practices.
Green Depot Opens LI Showroom
Green Depot, a Brooklyn-based supplier of environmentally
friendly and sustainable building products, has opened its first
showroom space on Long Island. The store at 67380 Main Rd. in
Greenport is Green Depot’s fifth on the East Coast and its second
in the New York City metro area.
The two-level, 1,400-sf space showcases building products including AFM Safecoat paints and finishes, FSC-certified lumber,
Ultra Touch natural cotton insulation and Moldex. It also features
a design center where Green Depot staff works with customers.
“As New Yorkers realize the health and cost benefits of green
building, the demand on Long Island and in the Hamptons, Sag
Harbor and Greenport areas in particular, is on the rise,” said Carmen Arguelles, president of Green Depot, in a release. Along with
its Brooklyn and Greenport showrooms, the company also has locations in Philadelphia, Boston and Newark. A Manhattan location is under construction.
