KAREN CANDREVA
Partner
Arent Fox LLP
Candreva represents developers and equity investors in the acquisition, development, leasing
and sale of real estate assets in the greater New
York City metropolitan area and throughout
the US. She is co-assigning partner for the real estate and real
estate finance practice groups in the New York office, and co-hiring partner for associates in those groups. Quote: “One very
significant factor affecting the changing role of women in the
industry is the changing role of men in the family. The status
quo among men no longer seems to be work first, family a far
distant second. Working fathers are increasingly taking on the
work/family juggling act that has always been unavoidable for
working mothers.”
JENNIFER CAREY
President
JLC Environmental Consultants, Inc.
When Carey founded JLC in 1987, she was its
sole employee. Carey now has four division
heads reporting to her, covering laboratory
services, environmental science, air quality
and safety and health training. Among JLC’s key projects this
year were work on the new Yankee Stadium project and a
200,000-sf food preparation facility with Flying Food Group
and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Quote: “In
the past 20 years, I have seen so many positive changes that will
help change our cultural view when it comes to the roles of
women in the workforce and in society. I can’t wait to see what
happens in the next 20 years—despite the current economy.”
FAITH HOPE CONSOLO
Chairman
Prudential Douglas Elliman Retail Leasing and Sales
Division
Consolo is responsible for providing comprehensive retail counsel to a wide array of domestic and international tenants and landlords.
Among her accolades over the past year has
been recognition by Real Estate New York as one of its Commercial Broker All Stars. Quote: “The retail sector in New York City
will always prevail because we are fueled by tourist dollars, as
well as local consumers. Market sectors are definitely changing
with the economic tides: the affordable chic brands are flourishing, while some ultra-deluxe brands may have to take a momentary backseat. At the same time, we will begin to see the
proliferation of the BRIC houses, i.e., retailers from Brazil,
Russia, India and China, opening on Main Street, in malls nationwide and such hip-hot spots as the Meatpacking District,
the Financial District and the Lower East Side. The retail mix
may vary over time, but New York City is the ‘Shopping Capital
of the World.’ ”
CAROL CORDEN
Executive Director
New Destiny Housing Corp.
As executive director of the 11-year-old citywide
nonprofit agency, Corden is responsible for all
efforts to provide housing and services for low-income domestic violence survivors and others
at risk of homelessness. She has developed 12
projects serving 370 households, and generated $46 million in
funding from public and private sources. Quote: “The credit
crunch, soaring cost of construction, reduced public resources
and sharply diminished availability of properties for renovation
and/or vacant spaces make development of affordable and supportive housing extremely difficult today and even more challenging in the future. However, affordable housing for families
at risk of homelessness must remain a public priority even in the
face of declining revenues.”
FIONA COUSINS
Principal, Sustainability Consultant, Mechanical
Engineer
Arup
Cousins is not only leader of Arup’s New York
sustainability team but also chair of the US
Green Building Council’s New York chapter.
During her tenure, chapter membership has
tripled to 1,500, staff has grown from one to eight and the budget has increased sevenfold. Quote: “Sustainability is a catchphrase today as society looks to use less energy, reduce its
reliance on oil and develop reliable alternative fuels. With
homes, offices and other buildings accounting for 40% of all
energy use, promoting green buildings and related sustainable
practices is critical to these goals.”
SUSAN CUNNINGHAM
Executive Vice President, Sales and Marketing
MKDA
Along with heading up brand marketing at this
full-service architectural design firm, Cunningham also spearheads business development,
often assisting corporate tenants to define
their space needs and helping get lease deals
done by establishing and building relationships between landlords, brokers and corporate office tenants. In six years with
MKDA, Cunningham has repositioned the company’s brand
and has brought the Manhattan office millions of dollars in
new business. She has also been successful in growing business
at the Stamford office of MKDA. Quote: “Companies that want
to create as much efficiency as possible within their work environments are moving toward fitting more staff into smaller
spaces and toward an increase in the use of sustainable design,
such as recycled furniture and energy-efficient lighting. Landlords are repositioning buildings in an effort to attract credit-worthy tenants and are creating pre-build, design-build and
turnkey office spaces.”
